Great BBC TV programme available online at bbc.co.uk/bbcthree from 4 July 2019. Comedian Lloyd Griffith fails to double his money during a week of gambling, exposing in the process the exploitative tricks of the modern gambling industry and the consequent dangers for young people. He meets young men who have dropped out of University or become suicidal as a result of their gambling addiction.

Gambling is more and more in the news just now. The Government decision to reduce the FOBT maximum stake does seem to have been a turning point. The House of Lords has now set up its own Select Committee on the gambling industry. Public Health England has started its own study of the harm gambling may be causing. The Labour Party has announced its intention, if it came to power, to radically reform gambling regulation and work towards a new Gambling Act.

The tide is turning against the industry. Now is an ideal time to make one's feelings known.

This documentary was excellent. Gambling operators are really having to work hard to get ahead of the game when it comes to responsible gambling.

GVC for example has defended itself and believes the industry is not getting enough credit for the remedial work it has done so far - however others argue that they are simply complying with regulations and not going above and beyond.

There's still plenty of work to do, but I'm hopeful that the benefits of better regulation and enforcement/penalties will trickle through over the coming year or two.

Hi there,
I am 51, female, have a daughter and partner and previously gambled very excessively then just completely stopped and gave it no further thought!
At the time, stress levels had been high for years and years and I have finally been diagnosed with Complex PTSD and awaiting further diagnosis for dissociative disorders.
I have spent money that wasn’t mine, will face the consequences of that in the future. Way in excess of £150K all without ever going in a betting shop. I can barely remember most of it as it felt like I was in a trance.
I had always played games, such as GameCube games, games on the Wii, on my phone, and I can’t even remember how it all started.
My career is over, I couldn’t work if I tried, we now rent a house as I spent all our money from our house. I have isolated for years.
For the life of me I cannot understand how there are so few limits on what you can spend online and how betting companies can freely contact you, give you money, send you gifts and invite you here and there.
Gambling exacerbated my mental health and had I known I had Complex PTSD I would have kept stressed levels at a minimum.
I wonder how many other women, afraid to speak up for fear of losing family, or for whatever other reason, are out there.
I would happily share my experience with the world if it meant saving lives and families from poverty caused by gambling.
